Privacy Attorney

Grant Thornton LLP is seeking a privacy attorney for a full-time senior counsel role in the firms in-house legal department and reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer/Deputy General Counsel.

  • Responsible for day-to-day management of privacy program and overseeing information governance initiatives with support from colleagues in Grant Thorntons legal department and information governance team
  • Be responsible for Grant Thorntons compliance with state and federal privacy laws both in terms of internal operations, and also in connection with new Grant Thornton service offerings
  • Provide expert-level legal advice and strategic support on privacy and data usage matters for the firm
  • Review and update privacy policies and guidelines in accordance with current laws, industry trends and emerging best practices
  • Develop short and long term strategies for the continuous improvement of Grant Thorntons privacy program
  • Manage privacy related incidents
  • Perform privacy impact assessments and periodic risk assessments
  • Develop privacy training courses
  • Review, negotiate privacy-related addenda and develop internal privacy-related templates
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned

    Qualifications - External
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and admission to a state bar (in good standing)
  • Minimum 6 years experience as a privacy lawyer in a corporate legal department or law firm setting
  • Demonstrated experience in operationalizing privacy legal requirements (ex. CCPA, GDPR) is mandatory
  • Knowledge of data ethics principles
  • Ability to plan and implement changes impacting the business as a result of emerging privacy laws
  • Ability to conduct comprehensive incident investigations and reach reasoned decisions
  • Excellent writing and editing skills are mandatory
  • Proven experience working with training developers and developing training courses
  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)
  • Limited travel as needed
