Job Summary

Serves as a staff psychotherapist for MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) Department of Family Medicine, MedStar Medical Group Family Medicine at Fort Lincoln (Fort Lincoln), the Family Medicine residency site for the MedStar Health-Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center Family Medicine Residency Program. This position is responsible for delivery of outpatient mental health care and care coordination at Fort Lincoln. These functions are performed in accordance all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Minimum Qualifications


Master's degree in Clinical Social Work, Professional Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy from a nationally accredited graduate program; completion of clinical internship and supervised clinical hours sufficient for licensure in the District of Columbia and Maryland by projected start date.


3 years' experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families required.


Active licensure in Clinical Social Work, Professional Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy in the District of Columbia and Maryland by projected start date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Must have good knowledge of use of electronic medical record systems. Must possess the ability to work on clinical teams and to balance provision of direct clinical care with care coordination and collaborative clinical care. Must have experience with tele-mental health service delivery. Must have a strong background in provision of evidenced-based brief and long-term psychotherapy and behavior change modalities. Must also have knowledge, awareness, and skills in multicultural psychotherapy provision and providing culturally informed mental health care to traditionally underserviced groups.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serves as the intake coordinator, conducting outpatient diagnostic intake evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults at Fort Lincoln.

  1. Meets weekly with the integrated behavioral health team to review diagnostic findings, treatment planning, and care management for patients and families.

  1. Provides culturally informed outpatient psychotherapy treatment for children, adolescents, adults, parents, and caregivers at Fort Lincoln as part of an integrated behavioral health team; treatment to include individual, couples, family, and group-based treatments. Common presenting areas include, but are not limited to depression disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, PTSD and other stress-related disorders, substance use disorders, as well as chronic disease-related behavioral health concerns.

  1. Coordinates care for patients and families receiving evaluation and/or treatment in the outpatient program at Fort Lincoln; includes referral for treatment within the Family Medicine integrated behavioral health team, referral for treatment to community-based or hospital-based providers outside of Fort Lincoln, and coordination of care with other health providers including primary care providers within and outside of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Fort Lincoln. Coordination of care with schools and other educators would be on an as needed basis. Generate reports on various aspects of behavioral health care.

  1. Provides outpatient psychotherapy treatment for women receiving prenatal and postnatal care at Fort Lincoln as part of the integrated behavioral health team.

  1. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

  1. Participates in Department of Family Medicine academic programming including case conferences, grand rounds, clinical trainings, faculty, resident, and staff meetings, and faculty, resident, and staff retreats.
